A 16th century farmhouse

Mas Vilella is a property in La Bisbal del Penedès, at 250 metres above sea-level, located at the foot of the Rotllat hills. Here we find Mas Vilella, a 16th-century farmhouse that features a picturesque wine cellar with underground vats.

However, the building’s origins date back even further. All the evidence indicates that it had been a Roman villa with a wine cellar. We know this because we have found pitchers, storage amphoras and earthenware jug necks dating from Roman times in the vineyard below the house.

Furthermore, the dimensions of the plots and vineyards follow Roman centuriation divisions.

Different generations,
the same legacy

ALBERT JANÉ | THE GRANDFATHER

The family’s wine-making tradition began in 1914. Albert Jané, the grandfather, opened a winery in El Vendrell, where he made wine and cava.

BENJAMÍ JANÉ and MARIA ÚBEDA | THE PARENTS

The tradition continued with Benjamí Jané and Maria Úbeda, who would build on the grandfather’s legacy, consolidate the business and make it grow.

ALBERT JANÉ

Albert Jané, the son of Benjamí and Maria, now looks after the property and lives in the house. Although he was born in El Vendrell, he left the land of his birth to work in the DO Montsant and, later, in the DOQ Priorat. However, he decided to come back home and restore his father’s legacy, caring for the vineyards that surround his family’s house.

The parents’ vineyards

Albert’s parents, Benjamí Jané and Maria Úbeda, planted the first vines on this property. With its poor, chalky soil, until then, only almond and carob trees had grown there. But in spite of that, the father persevered in growing grapevines.

It is these features that make the MAS VILELLA wine unique, conveying intact the essence of our history, following a tradition that has remained unchanged since 1988.
